Hameed Khalid Darweesh, an Iraqi refugee arriving in New York City as U.S. President Donald Trump's refugee and immigration ban went into effect, was detained and released Saturday (January 28). His release came as lawyers along with two Democratic lawmakers from New York fought to get those being held by U.S. Customs and Border Control agents into the country. Darweesh, 53, worked for the U.S. Army and for a U.S. contractor in Iraq from 2003 to 2013 as an interpreter and engineer, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court.
