(23 Mar 2022) As a tense tense third day of hearings on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson moved toward the closing hours Wednesday, questioning from a couple of Democratic Senators brought Jackson to tears. Shortly after New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker delivered emotional remarks on racial progress as he addressed Jackson's accomplishments, Sen. Alex Padilla of California asked the nominee what she would say to all of the young Americans out there "who may doubt that they can one day achieve the same great heights" that she has. Jackson appeared touched by the question and said his remarks were "very moving." She then choked up as she told the story of walking around at Harvard University, feeling as if she didn't belong, when another Black woman who she did not know passed and seemed to understand what she was feeling. "Persevere," she said the woman told her, adding that she would tell the young kids "to persevere." "I hope to inspire people to try to follow this path, because I love this country, because I love the law, because I think it is important that we all invest in our future," Jackson said. "And the young people are the future."
