The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Wednesday that they had signed two-time First Team All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to a five-year deal, four-year extension that keeps him with the team through the 2026 season. Fitzpatrick was on the final year of his rookie deal and the new agreement gives him a four-year extension worth reportedly an average of $18.4 million per year. That makes Fitzpatrick the highest paid NFL safety in the history of the league, with his deal getting him approximately $73.6 million over the four years of his extension. That's more than Jamal Adams, Justin Simmons, Harrison Smith and the rest of the big name safeties in the NFL. The deal also comes in before the Cincinnati Bengals could get an agreement with Jessie Bates or the Los Angeles Chargers with Derwin James. It's an important move for Omar Khan to get out in front of the coming safety market and set the rate that other teams have to work around as the NFL salary cap increases in the coming years.
