This is the first concert of the Jazz Tour and boy, there is a LOT to talk about! First of all, the video for "Fat Bottomed Girls" was filmed at this venue before the show. The stage show has changed quite a bit through the introduction of the "Pizza Oven" lighting rig; it was named because it was so hot underneath! A b-stage would drop from the ceiling for the acoustic set and talking about the set, there are quite a few changes made: The slow version of "We Will Rock You" is dropped for now (they would revive it next year in Japan) with only the fast version opening the show. With "Let Me Entertain You", the first new song is played at most shows (it was on rotation with "If You Can't Beat Them" in November). Additionally (or in some cases alternally), "Bicycle Race", "Dreamers Ball" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" would be heard on stage in late 1978 although Freddie would hint at "Fun It" and "Don't Stop Me Now" at some shows. Overall, the setlist now concentratest way more on their newer material, leaving "Keep Yourself Alive" as the only song from their first two albums! Also, for now the main set ends with "Bohemian Rhapsody" as "Sheer Heart Attack" is performed in a mini medley with the aforementioned Queen I track. But now, let's talk about the most obvious topic regarding the Jazz Tour; Freddie's voice! For some reason, the tour was scheduled to start mere weeks (if not days) after the recording sessions for the album had ended, resulting in little to no time for proper rehearsing (it shows) and, more importantly, vocal rest for Freddie. As a result, his voice would be on the rougher side right from the start and while there would be certain high points spread out on the tour Freddie would never be able to reach a similar level as on the previous tour. It honestly is beyond me why you would plan a tour like this (and how the band could give this a green light) with the knowledge of Freddie's vocal issues. Nonetheless, the band would have been warmed up well very soon and play one of their best tours of their careers. Snippets at this show: None 00:00:00 - 01. We Will Rock You (fast) 00:03:38 - 02.
