Today we pay our respects to one of my favorite whimsically macabre authors and artists, Edward Gorey! For years, I and many of his fans believed his ashes were scattered at his home (now museum), but, it turns out, part of them are also buried in Ironton, Ohio! Woodland Cemetery is in fact, his second resting place. His ashes were buried in the cemetery have resided unmarked with his mother since 2000. Edward Gorey died on April 15, 2000 at age 75. His personal life was as much a mystery as the subjects of his art. Obituaries paid tribute to his work and influence. He inspired many creators, including Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton and Daniel Handler (“Lemony Snicket”). His work is a mix of whimsy and macabre black humor. Not written with children in mind, it has come to appeal to them due to the popularity of his best-known work, “The Gashlycrumb Tinies,” an alphabet book with each letter dedicated to a child who meets an unfortunate fate. His work was also animated for the opening sequence of "Mystery" aired on PBS. He won a Tony for costume design for a revival of Dracula, for which he also designed the sets. Gorey, who had no children, left the majority of his fortune to a charitable trust, which benefits the welfare of cats and dogs, as well as other animals. The remaining portion his ashes were scattered at sea and also mixed with those of his remaining cats once they passed, and spread at his home in Cape Cod. The Elephant House (as he called it) is now a museum which works to preserve his work and legacy. @CashewPaul See my other videos on notable graves: • Graves Subscribe for more Cashew Paul vlogs: / @cashewpaul Purchase Cashew Paul Merchandise: https://teespring.com/stores/cashew-paul If you'd like to help fund my adventures: / cashewpaul or https://paypal.me/cashewpaul Visit the Edward Gorey House Museum in Yarmouth Port Cape Cod MA: https://www.edwardgoreyhouse.org #CashewPaul #FamousGraves #EdwardGorey
