CONGRESS INDULGING IN VOTE BANK POLITICS: MODI Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused the Congress of indulging in vote bank politics in the name of reservation. In an interview to a News Agency, the Prime Minister said that the basic spirit of the Constitution of India is being violated and that too for the sake of vote bank politics by the opposition. Mr Modi said that he wants to make the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes aware that they are being cheated by the opposition. Mr Modi said that he will fight to protect the rights of the people of this community. In reply to another question over the Opposition's allegation that ED, CBI and Income Tax Department are being used against them, the Prime Minister said his government has zero tolerance against corruption. To a question on high voter turnout in Jammu and Kashmir in the Lok Sabha elections, the Prime Minister said, it is a matter of big satisfaction for him as the brothers and sisters from Kashmir came forward to vote with great enthusiasm. 2. RED ALERT FOR FOUR DISTRICTS The severe cyclonic storm Remal has weakened into a cyclonic storm and is slowly going towards North and North-East. It had converted into a cyclonic storm this morning and it is centred around 24 kilometres from Bangladesh’s Mangla in the forenoon. Impact of the landfall of Ramel Cyclone is predicted in the North-East and Meteorology Department has issued alerts for Arunachal Pradesh till 29th May. West Kameng, Papum Pare, East Kameng and Pakke Kessang District may witness thunderstorms with lightning and Extremely Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places. The Met department has issued a red alert for these Districts from today to 8:30 am of 29th May. In a weather alert the department appealed to the people to avoid going to areas that face landslides or Land slips problems often and also appealed to avoid staying in vulnerable structures. Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall may occur and possibility of landslide and flash flood is high during this period. Apart from these four districts, Kurung Kumey, West Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, Lohit, Longding, Tirap, Changlang, Shiyomi and West Siang also under the yellow alert for till 30 May for heavy rainfall. 3. CYCLONE REMAL: 12 KILLED IN WB, ONE IN ASSAM Cyclone Remal has triggered heavy rain and wind in Assam and several districts are on high alert. Red alert has been issued for Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj districts while Orange alert has been issued for Dhubri, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Nalbari, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai and West Karbi Anglong districts. Incessant rain and strong wind disrupted the power supply in most of the affected districts including Guwahati since late last evening. Several district administrations have closed schools for today as precautionary measures and Northeast Frontier Railway has also cancelled several trains. So far one student died in Morigaon District and 12 students injured in Dhekiajuli, Assam when a tree fell on a school bus today morning due to heavy wind. In West Bengal six persons have died in cyclone Remal related incidents. 4. AGRI EXPERTS TO PARTICIPATE IN AGRO-TECH PROG IN VIETNAM A delegation comprising senior officials, agricultural experts and entrepreneurs from Arunachal Pradesh will participate in the ‘Agro-Tech Exchange and Cultural Exploration Programme’ in Vietnam from 17 to 19 June, the youth affairs department informed in a release. During the programme, they will engage in a series of meetings and field visits to learn about Vietnam’s advanced agricultural technologies and socio-cultural practices. 5. DRUG PEDDLER ARRESTED The Banderdewa police arrested a 23-year-old drug peddler, identified as Diljan Pegu, a resident of Bhipuria in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, on Monday, under the police’s Operation Dawn. Acting on information about movement of a drug peddler near the Arunachal-Assam boundary, a Banderdewa police team arrested Pegu from the Tarajuli area under Banderdewa PS. The team seized suspected heroin, weighing approximately 22.06 gms, from his possession. 6. CAPTJI PASSED AWAY Captain K K Venkatraman, popularly known as Captji in Arunachal Pradesh, who was a Life patron of the Lohit Youth Library Movement ever since its inception in 2007, passed away yesterday morning in Chennai. He was 76-year-old. He was cremated this evening with full military honours. He was a former Secretary of VKVs in Arunachal in 1980s and early 90s and was responsible for introducing military band training for both boys and girls in VKVs. Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein condoled the death of Venkatraman.
