here i continue to look at bands that featured on san francisco posters usually 2nd/3rd or 4th billing but today we have a top billing group from seattle who on their way down to los angeles for gigs and recording stopped off in the city to play a couple of shows with los angeles group 'the rising sons/the charlatans & big brother without janis in the line-up'...up in seattle they had laid down tracks for a possible single but one track dino valente's 'birdses' was thought to be too 'nice' by their manager so he had them shelve it and record 'jack of diamonds' at the studio where local legends 'the wailers' recorded ...the single was 'queen jane approximately/jack of diamonds' on 'parrot records' april '66 and a fine first release but did nothing sales wise....so through band connections in los angeles to charlie green then managing sonny & cher /buffalo springfield...they were sent down to re-record 'queen jane' in a much better and powerful form and it was then re-released again on 'parrot'...another single was released in '67 'the french girl/green rocky road' this time for 'uni records' and put out over the summer month's...a wonderful take of the ian & sylvia song that displays their great vocals and playing but once again little sales...but by late '67 it seems the band was over and the members moved on to other projects that really need a bigger platform than i have here...i first encountered them on a great compliation 'i flash daily' put out by u.k.label 'psycho records' around '85 which contained the singles plus various live and demo recordings..since then one or two more have have appeared but in better sound quality...they also appeared in an episode of 'the girl from uncle' where they are seen playing a snappy number called 'bulgarian baby' (pop over to my friends channel 'brucster99b' to check out the clip)...but a real curiosity has crept out over the past couple of years when 'arrow video' released on blu-ray a long forgotten film 'pit stop' from '68...i bought the said blu-ray and the soundtrack blew me away! it was a short lived line-up of the flash who after many line-up changes became 'nirvana/two guitars, bass, drums & darryl' and releasing a single...but here's where things get interesting they were brought in by film director jack hill to add music to the film...after informing the band what he wanted they improvised the whole film in one session!..if you get the chance to get a copy grab it and listen to the fuzzed-out jazzy blues rock eminating from your speakers....
