Static or surface noise? There is simple way to tell if the pops and crackles on your record are static or not, if they repeat in the same place at the same time, then this is not static, just damage on the record surface! Don’t forget that the better quality your record player the less surface noise you will hear! Which is the whole point of them, less surface noise and more detail and information, you will hear instruments you had no idea where their and details in the vocals as though you where in the studio at the same time! We do not recommend playing your records wet, yes this will kill static but will also cause damage to your stylus, if you have a moving coil - high end cartridge, you will shorten its life as the coils rust! While moving magnet cartridges will last longer, they will still degrade, not to mention the potential damage to the deck itself and you, it’s never a good idea to mix water with electronics. Also regularly wetting your records may result in the label becoming damaged!
