How To Do Pinch Harmonics in 3 Easy Steps. Today I am going to show how to do pinch harmonics in an easy 3 step lesson that even a pet rock could understand. Firstly before you can make your guitar squeal and scream like a banshee, you must learn the science behind this technique. The science is simply understanding that you can produce harmonics by skimming the side of your thumb with the strings. Our 2nd step in learning how to do pinch harmonics is bridging the gap between the science and actual application....aka how to hold the pick so that you can effectively skim your thumb across the strings simultaneously picking in order to create a pinch harmonic. The secret is to hold your pick with your thumb and index finger, while picking the strings with a down stroke at a slight angle. This will also help with speed picking later on! Last but not least, make your guitar scream! You already know how to do pinch harmonics now, all you have to do is practice the living hell out of it. By practice, I really mean just enjoy playing these as much as humanly possible! I am confident that you will progress insanely fast at this technique, because of how much freaking fun they are to pull off! Here are a few extra tips on how to do pinch harmonics as well. When you first start playing them, do so on the lower thicker strings. They are much easier to produce on those strings. Also when starting, stick with downstrokes to create your pinch harmonics. They are the bread and butter of this brutal technique. There are ways to play pinch harmonics with upstrokes as well, but I feel that it's a topic that is best kept separated. Lastly, use a distorted tone. This tone works really well with the pinch harmonic and will easily help these sick musical punctuations jump out of your guitar!
