(14 Nov 2007) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf says he knows it's time for him to step down as head of the army and could do so by the end of the month. SOT Musharraf The best way of handling it is the issue of transition to democracy which is my uniform issue okay, that must be handled. Musharraf spoke to the A-P Wednesday as his country continues to roil after 11 days under emergency rule. Protesters continue to take to the streets, pelting police officers with rocks and demanding that Musharraf restore the country's constitution and hold elections as planned. However he insists he's doing this with the best interest of the country in mind. SOT Musharraf emergency is not meant to rig elections. Emergency is in fact meant to make sure that the elections are held in a peaceful manner. He saved some of his harshest words for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. He put her under house arrest on Tuesday and is now questioning her ability to lead and whether she's trustworthy. SOT Musharraf "She is the one who never had any. She keeps wavering, she keeps changing statements, changing goal posts. So first of all, we are keen that we need to develop trust in her. Trust depends on people, on our previous record." He has said he expects elections will be held in the coming months but he has not given a timetable as to when he may restore the country's constitution.
