China urges Japan to stop nuclear wastewater discharge plan as IAEA presents the final review

The International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, has offered a final endorsement of Japan’s plan to release treated nuclear wastewater from its crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant into the Pacific Ocean. On Tuesday, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi presented the final review to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who will make the final call on how soon the controversial discharge will begin. As part of his four-day Japan visit, Grossi will open a new IAEA office at the Fukushima nuclear power plant site on Wednesday. Critics of the plan, including those in China, South Korea, and Pacific Island nations, raise the lack of full data sets for a proper evaluation to be made on safety. Wu Jianghao, Chinese Ambassador to Japan, urged Japan to handle the nuclear-contaminated water in a "science-based, safe and transparent" manner at the conference held in Tokyo. In 2011, the cores of three reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Japan melted down following a major earthquake and tsunami. As of March 2021, 1.25 million tons of nuclear-contaminated water had been accumulated in the plant, including water to cool the reactor, groundwater and rainwater, and the amount of water is still increasing. The Japanese government decided in April 2021 to filter and dilute the nuclear contaminated water from the Fukushima plant and discharge it into the sea from 2023. This process is expected to last 20 to 30 years, until the nuclear power plant is scrapped. __________________ ShanghaiEye focuses on producing top-quality contents.
