How will my pregnancy be different if I'm obese?

Studies show now that weight gain during pregnancy really can affect a mom's and baby's health. At our first visit at Wasatch OBGYN, we calculate your body mass index, based on your height and weight. That will help us determine a healthy weight that you should gain during pregnancy. If patients are right on with a healthy weight, they should gain between 25-25 pounds. If they are underweight, then they should gain around 40 pounds during pregnancy. If they are overweight, then we'll sometimes recommend just gaining 10 to 20 pounds. People who are overweight while pregnant are at a higher risk for having bigger babies that are harder to deliver, higher risk for c-section, diabetes, high blood pressure and developing blood clots, which can be dangerous.
