U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he was "comfortable" having his son and grandchildren back in schools this fall for in-person learning, and said they do have a national strategy for reopening schools safely, before adding that it's "ultimately" up to the governors. The comments came during a COVID-19 briefing. He also claimed, when asked about concerns children could potentially bring COVID-19 home to their family members, that children don't "transmit very easily" or at all. He also claimed that children don't catch COVID-19 or bring it home "easily." Trump also spoke about the ongoing spikes in cases in the U.S., especially in southern states, claiming that the number of cases started to rise in various states among young people "shortly after demonstrations," referring to anti-racism protests, saying these "presumably triggered" a relaxation in mitigation efforts, despite data showing some states with large protests did not see a spike. He also said young people congregating at bars and beaches were also a contributing factor. The president announced Wednesday a deal had been reached with the Pfizer to produce 100 million vaccine doses once emergency use authorization is given by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which could potentially happen this year, as well as an additional 500 million doses "shortly thereafter." Asked about comments made earlier in the day by former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, calling him the first "racist" president, Trump responded saying that he's done "more for Black Americans than anybody with the possible exception of Abraham Lincoln, touting criminal justice reform and saying Black unemployment was at a record low.
