This balanced vocal onset exercise helps to develop smooth onset of sound. Done on the Oo vowel. This exercise uses short crisp notes i.e. staccato followed by smooth and connected notes i.e. legato. (sometimes called Smooth, Clean, Simultaneous) In a glottal onset the vocal fold close before air flow begins - Uh Oh. In an aspirate onset air flow begins before the vocal folds close - Hey. In a balanced onset air flow and vocal fold movement occur simultaneously - You. A balanced onset is desired for the most styles of singing and is the healthiest way to commence phonation.
