What Remains: The struggle of Sunderbans’ inhabitants in the wake of Cyclone Amphan | The Caravan

On the afternoon of 20 May, Cyclone Amphan made landfall in the Sundarbans Delta. The storm ripped through riverine villages. The tide broke embankments and flooded up to 3 kilometres inland. Almost all the mud huts were washed away, along with livestock and valuables. Two weeks later, a majority of the 5,000 people in both villages, which are in Kultali Tehsil, have no shelter, with only about 2 percent staying in temporary relief camps run in schools. As most wells were salinated by the tide, villages in the region have little or no access to drinking water. With all livelihoods hit, people are entirely dependent on meagre government  rations. Other villages further south faced even worse devastation. Rohan Chakravarty reports.
