AG’s special deputy to probe Manhattan DA’s Weinstein’s case

ALBANY — The state attorney general is set to appoint a special deputy to investigate Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr.’s handling of a probe into disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weitein, a source told the Daily News on Tuesday. The move comes after Gov. Cuomo — more than a month after calling for the investigation — sent AG Eric Schneiderman a formal referral. It’s not clear whether the special deputy Schneiderman is appointing is from iide or outside his office. Schneiderman spokeswoman Amy Spitalnick would only say that “we are committed to puuing a compreheive, fair and independent investigation.” AG details abuse that sparked his suit agait The Weitein Co. (Charles Sykes/Charles Sykes/InvisioAP) The governor cited questio about the working relatiohip between Vance’s office and the New York Police Department’s special victims division when it came to looking into Weitein’s alleged 2015 sexual assault of Ambra Battilana. Cuomo is asking Schneiderman’s office to “conduct an inquiry into the actio of, and interactio between, the New York County District Attorney’s office and the New York City Police Department regarding sexual assault complaints, including in connection with the 2015 Weitein matter.” The attorney general review, Cuomo said, must be done “in a manner that avoids interfering with any ongoing investigatio by the Manhattan District Attorney. The inquiry should review all relevant materials, question all relevant witnesses, and issue a report outlining findings and any recommendatio.” AG Eric Schneiderman shows concern on sale of Weitein's company The Daily News previously reported that Cuomo became only the second governor over the past 50 yea — and the fit since his father, Mario, in 1994 — to seek a review of a sitting DA’s decision-making process in a case. Cuomo called for the review the same day he received a request from the Time’s Up movement. It was also the day that actress Cynthia Nixon announced a Democratic primary challenge agait the governor.
