Welcome and thank you for joining our live stream of this special Mass as we celebrate Simbang Gabi. The Simbang Gabi is a cherished Filipino Christmas tradition to prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ. The theme for this year’s Simbang Gabi is “All Generations Call Me Blessed.” The main presider is Father Greg Sakowicz, Rector of the Cathedral, and concelebrated by the Associate Pastors and Resident Priests Around the world, Simbang Gabi is usually held in the evenings to accommodate urban schedules starting on December 15. At Holy Name Cathedral, we host Simbang Gabi at 7:00pm on December 15, 2022. Simbang Gabi, meaning ‘Mass in the Dark,” takes place at dawn traditionally at 4 AM. Our novena starts on December 15th ending with the midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The Christmas lantern called “Parol” a five-pointed star, is one of the most iconic symbols of Filipino Christmas spirit. It represents the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Wise Men to the manger of Baby Jesus. Parols will process at the start of the Mass sharing light into the darkened church while the Cathedral Filipino Singers (singers in masks) start with entrance hymn “O Come, All Ye Faithful” followed by Filipino Christmas hymns and psalms. White vestments are used and the “Gloria” is sung. Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon! (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!).
