B.Pharm Semester-I | Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry Practical | Limit Test for Magnesium Hydroxide The limit test for magnesium hydroxide is a simple quality control test performed to ensure that impurities such as chlorides, sulfates, heavy metals, and iron are present only within acceptable pharmacopeial limits. In this test, a measured amount of magnesium hydroxide is dissolved in dilute nitric acid to obtain a clear solution. For detecting chlorides, silver nitrate solution is added, and any resulting white turbidity of silver chloride is compared with a standard solution to ensure it does not exceed the permissible limit. Similarly, to test for sulfates, barium chloride solution is added to check for the formation of barium sulfate precipitate. The presence of heavy metals is tested by treating the solution with hydrogen sulfide or sodium sulfide and observing any dark coloration. The intensity of the precipitate or color formed is carefully compared with a standard prepared using known amounts of impurities. This limit test is important to confirm that magnesium hydroxide used in pharmaceuticals is pure, safe, and free from harmful levels of contaminants.
