Wide of scene and smoke STORYLINE Israeli peace activists and Palestinian protesters scuffled with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank village of Naalin on Friday. The village is the site of frequent protests against the separation barrier Israel is constructing in the West Bank village. Israeli soldiers used tear gas to disperse the protesters, who threw stones in return. Six years after Israel began building the barrier, Palestinian villagers march almost daily in an attempt to halt construction work that threatens to swallow up thousands more acres of West Bank land. Residents say the structure will cut them off from their olive groves and farmlands. The aim of the protests is to slow the construction of the barrier and draw media attention to their situation in an attempt to get the Israeli high court to challenge the barrier's route. Israel says the barrier is a temporary defence against Palestinian attacks. However, at points it extends into the West Bank, incorporating Jewish settlement blocs and seizing land from Palestinian villages. Palestinians say the barrier is a form of land-grabbing by Israel.
