Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel is getting more extravagant. But only for one week. His ceiling frescoes will be joined by Raphael’s 12 tapestries. Raphael was Michelangelo’s Renaissance contemporary and rival. The tapestries haven’t been on the walls of the Sistine Chapel in centuries. The reunion marks the 500th anniversary of the artist’s death. The tapestries depict scenes from the Acts of the Apostles. It took conservationists 10 years to restore them. All 12 are made with silk, wool and gilded gold and silver thread. It’s no wonder they’re typically on display behind glass in climate-controlled spaces.
