On the night of 31 December 1899, https://tinyurl.com/s2jye68p the night that divided the 19th and 20th centuries, Alberione prayed for five hours before the Blessed Sacrament, and contemplating the future, felt that he was called to do something for the people of the new century. Alberione founded a total of ten religious congregations, aggregated institutes, and lay cooperators. These congregations, started by Blessed James Alberione, use modern media technology and publish materials to spread the Word of God and help in personal devotions. Indeed, Alberione is one of the greatest visionaries of the 20th century Church. Alberione was a marvel of his time, a "saint" who dared to dream big for the growth of the Church, answering to the specific needs of the Church of the time. James Alberione was a spiritual guide. James Alberione was a writer and organizer. James Alberione was a social and religious reformer. James Alberione was an original and creative thinker. James Alberione greatly appreciated the role and dignity of women. James Alberione thought of empowerment of women even at the beginning of the 19th century. James Alberione was a prolific writer who has many books to his credit. James Alberione is rightly called the marvel of our time James Alberione was a great organizer. The present and recent Popes have talked about Blessed James Alberione… Pope Francis said of Alberione: ‘That Great Apostle of Communications.’ Saint Pope John Paul II called him as ‘the First Apostle of the New Evangelization.’ And St Pope Paul VI called him: ‘A marvel of our times’, saying, “Father Alberione has given the Church new means to broaden her apostolate, new awareness, possibilities and ways of her mission in the modern world and with modern means.” Blessed James Alberione, born in 1884 in Italy, was a diocesan turn religious cleric. He was a diocesan priest of Alba. The ordination, a doctorate in theology, roles as a spiritual director, teacher, and as an associate pastor, didn’t give Alberione a complete satisfaction in his priestly ministry. It wasn't until he recognized how the media—press, radio, and film—could be used to spread the Catholic faith that he began to discern his calling. Following the vision and experience from the Blessed Sacrament during the cross over night of the 1900, while spending four hours in prayer and adoration, Blessed James Alberione decided to do something different for the people of the new century. The anxious question that constantly disturbed Alberione’s young mind was: Where is the humanity moving? Will they be saved? Having experienced disorder and confusion at his younger age and become a victim of the negative influence of imprudent reading during his seminary days, he intended to fight the bad press with the good press. For this noble media mission Blessed James Alberione founded the Pauline Family—five religious congregations and four institutes, especially the Society of St Paul and the Daughters of St Paul. Blessed James Alberione started a trade school for youngsters and taught them to set type and print Catholic books with a mission of evangelization through the means of social communication. Blessed Alberione says, “God the Father gave the Eternal Word Incarnate in human body; the publishers give the same Word in paper and ink, tape and sound, film and image.” Pauline Sisters are canonically the Daughters of St Paul, a congregation of Pontifical right, founded in 1915.
