With a well-deserved home victory against 1. FSV Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund remains hot on the heels of league leaders FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. BVB impressed with their remarkable efficiency – and three headed goals. Borussia Dortmund's thoroughly deserved 4-0 (3-0) home win against Mainz 05 had several aspects the hosts can be extremely pleased with: Firstly, coach Niko Kovac's team is now unbeaten in 15 Bundesliga matches. Secondly, BVB had never before scored three headed goals in a single half, and thirdly, defensive specialist Ryerson provided the assists for all four goals. The match was a resounding success for Dortmund. Dortmund immediately gained possession and put pressure on the Mainz defense. After an early free kick from the right edge of the penalty area, BVB took the lead. Julian Ryerson delivered a perfectly weighted cross, Serhou Guirassy rose high, easily outmaneuvered defender Dominik Kohr, and headed home from six meters out to make it 1-0. It was their first shot on goal. And they continued in the same style and with the same efficiency just five minutes later. After another cross from Ryerson, again from the right edge of the penalty area, this time to the far post, Maximilian Beier was completely unmarked and headed the ball home. The ball bounced off the arm of Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz from a tight angle and very close range, and from there it flew over the goal line. Second shot on goal, second goal. "It's crazy, really, when you look at the first half. I think it was a good half from us, but we conceded three goals from set pieces. I'd say Dortmund were very efficient, we were inefficient. When you're 3-0 down at halftime, it becomes difficult, and that definitely took the energy out of us," said Mainz coach Urs Fischer. Although Mainz seemed briefly stunned by this quickfire double, they soon had a great opportunity to pull one back. After 22 minutes, the lightning-fast striker Silas capitalized on a defensive error, running clear on goal against Dortmund's goalkeeper Gregor Kobel – but he pushed his shot well wide of the Dortmund goal. After that, the game settled down, though the challenges remained intense. The BVB defense, partly due to the suspension of defender Nico Schlotterbeck (who had received his fifth yellow card), repeatedly struggled to close down the gaps. However, Mainz's attacking players were always a fraction too deep when receiving passes, and therefore offside. In terms of efficiency, Dortmund were unbeatable that evening. After a corner from Ryerson, Guirassy headed the ball home from four meters out, right in front of goal, to make it 3-0. Goalkeeper Batz and all the Mainz defenders seemed to succumb to the physical force of the Guinean striker. The game was effectively decided early on. "When we concede three goals from set pieces and three headers, something's wrong. We defended poorly," said Mainz defender Stefan Posch. "This game can't derail our good run; we'll keep going." At the start of the second half, the game was initially more balanced, but BVB remained more dangerous in front of goal and continued to press the tempo. Batz had to parry Julian Brandt's powerful low shot from ten meters in the 57th minute, and Guirassy headed just wide from a corner in the 60th minute. After a corner from Ryerson, the ball unfortunately bounced off Dominik Kohr's lower back, from where it trickled into the Mainz net for 4-0. After the match, the German Football League (DFL) ruled that Ramy Bensebaini, who had touched the ball, should be credited with the goal. This meant Ryerson had provided the assists for all four BVB goals. BVB goalkeeper Kobel had to make one save in the 76th minute against substitute Sheraldo Becker. However, Mainz remained lackluster and harmless in the second half and never seriously threatened Dortmund's victory.
