Facing reconciliation in Canada's dark history of residential school deaths and atrocities

Following the discovery of the remains of 215 children at the site of Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia, Canadians are once again faced with questions on reconciliation. 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and put in residential schools where at least 90% suffered severe physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Reconciliation Canada says there was a 40 – 60% mortality rate in Indian residential schools. Sheldon Neil sat down with Buffy Sainte-Marie following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report released in 2015. The singer-songwriter says what happened in residential schools should be called a genocide, quoting her own lyrics: "Yet where in your history books will it tell Of the genocide basic to this country's birth Of the preachers who lied, and the children who died, How a nation of patriots returned to their earth” Buffy Sainte-Marie shares her own story of her family’s history in residential schools, and explains the generations that grew up without parents and family are still suffering the consequences.
