Every time I revisit this solo, there’s more surprises hiding within… This time it was an intimidating pentatonic hammer-on-from-nowhere lick, which turned out was a lot easier than I realised, the very same one I’d recently learned in Hot For Teacher. One of the most valuable insights I’ve uncovered on my guitar journey is that every great player has a playbook: a set of concepts or licks that they gravitate towards, and often reuse in one way or another. It’s usually disguised through use of a different rhythm, position or interval, but the mechanics can be copy + pasted over to allow the artist to be original without having to reinvent the wheel. The ‘Snarling Dog’ lick from Eruption also appears in this solo, transposed up to Bm but still using the open E string, also appearing in Somebody Get Me a Doctor.
