Mezmerize is the fourth studio album by Armenian-American heavy metal band System of a Down, released on May 17, 2005, by American Recordings and Columbia Records. Upon its release, the album received acclaim from critics. Track listing All lyrics written by Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian, except where noted. All music written by Malakian, except "Question!", written by Malakian and Tankian. It was released on May 17, 2005 and is the first in a double album to be completed with Hypnotize in the fall of 2005. Four months before the final release, in January 2005, the track "Cigaro" was made available as a free download on the internet. The cover of Mezmerize shows a kind of figure on a black background. The figure itself is in sand colors, so in lighter shades of brown, held. While the lower half of the figure shows three facial details, two of which are upside down, the actual head of the figure occupies the upper part. The eyes are different in color from the rest of the figure, because the iris is held in a red tone. On the forehead of the figure is a clock with Roman numbers to see down from the seven threads on which transparent balls are attached. The entire artwork was designed by Vartan Malakian, father of band member Daron Malakian. On the CD, the numbers from one to twelve are arranged in Indian Arabic numerals like a clock around the center. The numbers and the background are colored in red and white tones. The rest of the CD packaging is mostly in purple, red and white. Several times eyes are indicated. Part of the CD cover of Hypnotize, the successor to Mezmerize, can be pushed into an opening in the Mezmerize CD packaging, which connects both albums. The accompanying booklet differs in color from the packaging. The pages on which the lyrics are printed are dark gray or black. On two other pages, another eye is hinted at. The iris is outlined by the numbers printed on the CD. The font in the booklet is printed with ink from soybeans. Furthermore, chlorine-free paper was used for the production. Malakian wrote "Old School Hollywood" after playing in a celebrity baseball game for charity. The song mentions Tony Danza and Frankie Avalon, who played in the game The Japanese version of the album contains a slightly different mix of "Soldier Side (Intro)" with strings, while the leaked version of "Cigaro" contains a 4-stick hit intro in the retail version.
