You mentioned that you have a 17 month old daughter who has been drinking a lot lately and not eating so much although she used to be a good eater. You're wondering if this is okay or if it's not okay. Really your pediatrician is going to be the best one to determine if her growth is on track and if she's doing well. They can check her out and assess her growth curves and make sure that she's where she needs to be. Generally speaking though, kids who drink a lot before meals or even during, before they've eaten their food, will want to eat less because the fluids fill up their tummy. Try offering milk to your daughter only with meals and give her sips of water in between when she says that she's thirsty. She may just love milk and have gotten to like the taste of it and because she's drinking so milk she doesn't want to eat. See if that makes a difference. Most toddlers only need two to three cups of milk each day so this is all she needs at this point. Hopefully she can get the rest of her calories from food at mealtime. You also mentioned you've been giving her formula. At 17 months of age most kids don't need formula so this is another good thing to talk with your pediatrician about. If your pediatrician doesn't feel like she needs the extra nutrition from formula you can just focus on giving her cow's milk which usually meets the nutritional needs of a toddler and it's also much cheaper. Good luck with everything and if you have any other questions for me in the future feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.
