Chorale No. 1285 of 1345 Music: Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) First performance: 13/05/1751 (Sixth Sunday after Easter - Exaudi Sunday) Verse Text: Sie wüten fast und fahren her Text source: 3rd verse of Wo Gott, der Herr, nicht bei uns hält - (Jodocus Koch, 1524) Chorale melody: Wo Gott, der Herr, nicht bei uns hält (Composer unknown) 7th movement of cantata "Es kommt aber die Zeit, daß wer euch tötet, wird meinen, er tue Gott einen Dienst daran" (GWV 1137/51) Scoring: SATB, strings and continuo. The chorale text comes from the hymn "Wo Gott, der Herr, nicht bei uns hält" by Justus Jonas der Ältere (Jodocus Koch) (1524). It is a paraphase of Psalm 124. Graupner sets verse 3 in this cantata: Sie wüten fast und fahren her, Als wollten sie uns fressen, Zu würgen steht all ihr begehr, Gotts ist bei ihn'n vergessen; Wie Meereswellen einher schla'n, Nach Leib und Leben sie uns stahn, Des wird sich Gott erbarmen My rough translation: Thick and fast and ever near, They're rushing in to fight, For they are bent on our demise, Fogetting all God's might. Like a churning sea, wave on wave, They come, our lives we cannot save, Yet God's mercy will make all right. The origin of the melody is unknown. According to bach-cantatas.com its earliest referenced appearance is in Geistliche Lieder (editor: Joseph Klug) published in Wittenberg in 1529. However, copies of this are no longer extant. Note that verses from the hymn were also set by Scheidt, Buxtehude, Pachelbel and JS Bach, the latter in various works, notably BWV 178 and BWV 258. More details to follow - check back later!
