China to work closely with IAEA in dealing with Japan's nuclear wastewater disposal

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed to invite Chinese experts to join a technical team for dealing with Japan's decision to dump nuclear polluted water into the ocean, and China will work closely with the organization to better tackle the issue, said Wang Wenbin, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at a regular briefing in Beijing on Monday. "Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster is one of the worst nuclear accidents in the world. It is very irresponsible for the Japanese government to unilaterally decide to deal with the Fukushima nuclear accident and to dump the nuclear polluted water into sea in spite of doubts and objections at home and abroad, under the conditions that it has not spared its efforts to find the safest ways, opened the overall relevant information and not fully negotiated with neighboring countries and the international community. Japan's actions are not only directly harm the vital interests of the people in Japan's neighboring countries, but also threaten the global marine environment and the international public health security. As an important stakeholder, China is gravely concerned about Japan's irresponsible behavior," Wang said. China next will work closely with the IAEA to tackle the Japan's nuclear polluted water disposal. "China advocates that the IAEA should set up a technical team that includes China and other stakeholders as soon as possible to carry out the follow-up implementation, the international assessment and monitoring of the disposal plan for the polluted water at Japan's destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant. China will keep close communication with the organization for dealing with this issue. The IAEA now is actively preparing to set up the relevant technical team and has confirmed to China that it will invite Chinese experts to join the team. China will give its full support for the follow-up work of the organization. Before launching the discharge of nuclear polluted water into the sea, Japan should earnestly meet the concerns of China, other stakeholders and the international community," said Wang.
