One of the world's longest-running conflicts rages on the edge of the Sahara: the Polisario Front has been fighting Morocco for 50 years, aiming to reconquer the territory annexed by Rabat in 1975. To contain Polisario incursions, the North African monarchy has deployed 100,000 soldiers and erected a 2,700-kilometer sand wall, allowing it to control 80% of the former Spanish colony, a land rich in mineral deposits and a coastline rich in fisheries. Since 1991, the United Nations has called in vain for a referendum on self-determination.
