By Tim Martin Columbia-Greene Media CATSKILL — The majority of the crowd at Saturday’s Spring Fever Explosion boxing event at the Catskill High School gym came to see the four local fighters on the seven-bout card, including headliner Alvin Varmall Jr. The 24-year-old Cruiserweight contender did not disappoint. Varmall staggered veteran Leo Pla in the first round, before eventually finishing him off in the second to score a TKO victory and raise his professional record to 9-0-1 with 8 knockouts. Varmall dominated the action in the opening round against a game Pla (5-7-2), who tried to counter, but with little effect. A serious of body blows and combinations sent Pla to the canvas about a minute into the second round. He got to his feet before the count of 10, but was quickly shaken again by Varmall’s power. A left hook to the head sent Pla halfway through the ropes for another knockdown when Hall of Fame referee Ron Lipton stepped in and stopped the contest, 1:40 into the round.
