Today, it is Hariprasad Chaurasia who is doing the same with his magnificent playing. Never before has flute been used so much like a human voice. In his flute, one can almost hear the words. His “Meends” in “Malkosh” are indeed very moving. Despite the shortcomings of the instrument, he has brought out the spirit and essence of the Raga magnificently. Specially in the Aalap. That he is equally deft in the rhythmic improvisations was evident in his two compositions - One in Rupak and the other in Teental. Provoked by his varied rhythmics, the “Wizard of Tabla” Zakir Hussain also rose to great heights. The passages which respond to a question and answer formula, both the instrumentalists were brilliant. This recording certainly is the fruition of the record number of performances that he has been presenting for the last 20 years. Malkauns: This Raga should be performed in the third part of the night, preferably mid-night. Re (2nd note), Pa (5th note) are absent from the Octave. Ma (4th note) is Shuddh (Pure), Dha (6th note) and Ni (7th note), Vadi Sur, is Ma and Samvadi Sur, secondary note is Sa.
