The direct-to-video movie market might not be the first place you look for when you want to watch a good horror movie but sometimes, there are real gems that you find if you really look for them. One such movie, or shall I say movies, happens to be some of my absolute favourite vampire horror movies and yes, I am referring to the Subspecies film franchise. The film series follows a rather nasty and villainous vampire, Radu Vladislas, played by Anders Hove, and the terrible things he does on his quest to turn the beautiful, Michelle Morgan, played by Luara Tate and then Denice Duff, into his little vampire fledgling. Ted Nicolau is the man behind the entire series and all the movies were produced by Full Moon Studios and Castle Film Studios. What do vampires and this movie have in common? They both originate in Romania! To achieve the appearance the filmmaker sought for the vamps, the series was shot on location in Romania, using stop-motion and rod puppet techniques. The films have garnered generally mixed reviews, with critics praising the director's decision to film in Romania as well as the spectacular effects.
