[Notes:shots of karzai and abdullah from yesterday's pkg] The two main candidates in Afghanistan's presidential election are both stating they believe their in the lead as ballots continue to be counted [Notes:Various of IEC staff and officials counting papers from 1430 GVW] Millions turned out at the polls on Thursday and the sheets are being gone through by hand. [Notes:voting scenes from 0820_afghan_election] Still there were fewer people voting this time around as an uptick in violence there kept many people away. [Notes:karzai from yesterday's pkg] Despite that a spokesman for current president Hamid Karzai says all signs point to another term for him. [Notes:sot from today's 1430 GVW] SOT Waheed Omar, Spokesman for Hamid Karzai: our own assumption, based on all what we have heard and received and what we have seen so far, we are well ahead in the elections." [Notes:vo of abdulla] The main challenger is Abdullah Abdullah, the former foreign minister and he says he's winning. That's despite all the rigging which has taken place in some parts of the country. So the preliminary results are promising."
