Following Todd Phillips' Joker (2019)'s insane box office success grossing more than $1 billion worldwide, Warner Brothers wanted him to make a sequel despite him going on record saying there wouldn't be one. However, Warner Brothers gave Phillips a lot of money to make the sequel so he agreed only to deliver a subversive sequel that is actively antagonsitic to fans of the original.
