Doom II: Hell on Earth is a first-person shooter video game developed by id Software. It was released on October 10, 1994, for personal computers running DOS. It is a sequel to the popular and revolutionary Doom, which was released a year earlier. In 1995, Doom II won the Origins Award for "Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Video Game of 1994." Unlike Doom, which was distributed via shareware mail order, Doom II was sold in stores. The game takes place shortly after the events of Doom. The player once again controls the nameless marine from the game, who dealt with the forces of hell on Phobos, Deimos, and Mars in the original game. Returning to his native Earth, he discovers that it, too, has fallen victim to a monster invasion. Over the course of 30 levels (not counting two secret ones), the player once again encounters the hellish hordes. At some point, he learns that the few surviving earthlings are at the spaceport. With his help, they escape on a transport ship. The hero, the only living being on the planet, calmly awaits death, satisfied that human civilization is saved and can be reborn somewhere in the depths of space. But a few minutes later, he receives a message from the fugitives stating that they have discovered the place from which the forces of hell have invaded our reality. The marine reaches the gateway between dimensions, but sees no way to close it. In search of a solution, he journeys into hell. Eventually, the hero finds the massive demon's lair and slays it. In its death throes, the demon destroys Hell, and the invasion of Earth ends.
