How to Stop the Loss - Rescuing Water and Soil

This informative video highlights the impact of climate change on soil degradation and erosion in Ethiopia's Somali region. The video showcases how the higher frequency of droughts and flash floods has led to significant damage to the landscape and the local population of agro-pastoralists and their livestock. However, the solution is the Dry Valley Rehabilitation and Productive Use (DVRPU) approach. This approach involves constructing water-spreading-weirs and dry stone measures that greatly reduce the flow velocity of periodic floods, allowing for the flood waters to soak the soils, raising ground water levels, and for fertile sediment to settle. The physical and biological measures control the floods coming down from the highlands and create new and fertile lands with increased soil moisture to produce food and fodder, increased ground water recharge, and the availability of water for domestic and livestock needs.
