Are You Suffering From Anovulatory Infertility? During the menstrual cycle, a woman's ovaries release an egg in preparation for pregnancy. But sometimes the ovaries don't. This condition is called anovulation. Anovulation is the condition in which the ovaries do not release an egg during a menstrual cycle, leading to a missed ovulation during the month. Sometimes a woman can have an anovulatory cycle in one month and then a regular cycle in the next. Sometimes, it can become chronic, with the ovaries not releasing eggs for months or years at a time. Chronic anovulation is one of the primary causes of infertility in women all over the world. Impotence caused by anovulation is called "anovulatory infertility." Causes Several factors can lead to anovulation in women. Some of them are listed below: Obesity or overweight Thyroid dysfunction Polycystic ovary syndrome, commonly known as PCOS. Extremely high levels of stress Hyperprolactinemia, i.e. high level of hormonal prolactin in the body Perimenopause, i.e. menopause before the expected age. Side effects caused by certain drugs, such as NSAIDs and steroids. These drugs can interfere with the ability of the ovary to release eggs. CLASSIFICATION: The clinical approach to ovulation induction requires an understanding of the causes of anovulation. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified different categories of anovulation into three categories: ●WHO class1: Hypogonadotropic hypogonadal anovulation (hypothalamic amenorrhea [HA]) ●WHO class2: Normogonadotropic normoestrogenic anovulation (almost all women in this category have polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS]), when using the Rotterdam criteria for the diagnosis of PCOS ●WHO class3: Hypergonadotropic hypoestrogenic anovulation (primary ovarian insufficiency [POI; premature ovarian failure]) However, most experts have moved away from this terminology and assign women to one of the four most common ovulatory disorders: hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HA), PCOS, POI, or hyperprolactinemia. GROUP I Hypothalamus – Pituitary Failure *Low weight / Exercise *Tumour *Kallmann’s Syndrome *Surgery / Radiotherapy GROUP II PCOS GROUP III Ovarian Failure GROUP IV Hyperprolactinemia Symptoms of anovulation Irregular menstrual cycle: when the duration of a woman's menstrual cycle is longer than 35 days, it is considered an irregular menstrual cycle. Amenorrhoea or absence of menstruation. Inability to conceive: This includes the condition of not being able to get pregnant after a minimum of one year of trying. Treatment The treatment of anovulation usually depends on its cause. If the patient is overweight, it is suggested that she lose almost 10% of her body weight. It can help in starting the process of ovulation again. Changes in lifestyle and diet have also proved positive. But the most common treatment includes fertility medications. However, these medications should only be prescribed by a registered doctor. In order to tackle infertility, IVF treatment with donor eggs is also suggested. Conclusion Many factors affect a woman's hormonal balance and menstrual cycle. For many women, infertility caused by anovulation can be very stressful. It has been shown that different treatments have worked for different individuals. If all treatments do not work, an IVF treatment with a donor egg can be considered. If a woman suspects any of the above symptoms, she should consult a doctor so that she can explore possible health problems and appropriate treatment can be suggested in time.
