The commonest method that women prefer to use is something known as the safe period that is the time when the ovulation or the egg formation from the ovary happens and if they avoid intercourse at that time it is helpful in preventing a pregnancy. However this is not a foolproof method because there can be times when the ovulation happens earlier or later. The second most common method used is the barrier contraception or men using condoms however should be aware that there is a 10% failure rate in this method of contraception. If a couple is very sure that they do not want a pregnancy for a few years after marriage the best and safest method that they can resort to is the low dose oral contraceptive pills even though a lot of women may be very apprehensive about taking these tablets we reassure them that these are very low dose pills they do not have any side effects. All they do is block the ovarian function temporarily until the woman is taking the pills she cannot conceive. After that whenever she wants to conceive she can stop the pills and start trying for a pregnancy straight away emergency contraception is resorted to as the name suggests only in case of an emergency. That is if the lady has forgotten to take her pills or there is an accidental rupture of the condom. Then it is better that she resorts to taking the emergency pills which need to be taken within 72 hours of the sexual contact. However we recommend that emergency pills should not be taken repeatedly and as a standard method of contraception.
