Utah father Micah Smith charged after young children nearly die during trek in Big Cottonwood Canyon

A Utah father has been arrested for torturing and abusing his three children following a canyon hike. 31-year-old Micah Smith was arrested on Tuesday, over a month after he took his three children on a trek through the Broads Fork Trail in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The children were two, four, and eight. The group was reported missing later that day. They were later found fighting for their lives in the aftermath of an unrelenting storm. Authorities say Smith suffered third-degree frostbite. Two of the children were found in critical condition, including a four-year-old boy, who had no pulse. The four-year-old needed CPR for 25 minutes before his heart started beating again. An eight-year-old was found in stable condition. A GoFundMe was launched detailing the incident, but it has since been deleted. The GoFundMe claimed that Smith "bravely sacrificed himself" to protect the children by lying on them to keep them warm. Investigators argue that he put them in jeopardy in the first place. Authorities also say the children expressed concerns before the trip, but Smith allegedly ignored their concerns. In arresting documents, investigators wrote, Smith's "intentional and self-act left his children in grave danger, with one of them dying and being revived multiple times, and will never fully recover."
