Police in Sri Lanka have fired fire tear gas to hold back thousands of protesters who stormed the prime minister's office in Colombo. The protesters were demanding that Ranil Wickremesinghe step down along with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who has promised to do so today after flying to the Maldives earlier today. With Rajapaksa being overseas Prime Minister Wickremesinghe was appointed as acting president. Protest leaders, however, say the prime minister is Rajapaksas' ally, and have warned of a decisive fight if he does not resign by this afternoon. Sri Lanka is facing financial turmoil following the COVID-19 pandemic, high fuel prices and rising unemployment.
