Paul in this section of scripture looks at his own beloved nation of Israel, the Jews and he feels the sorrow and burden of seeing so many of his brothers, his kinsmen in Judaism, lost and blind to the truth. Just as we, now who love the United States see it slipping more and more into darkness and beginning to receive the "woe" spoken of in Isaiah 5:20-24. "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight. Woe to men mighty at drinking wine. Woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink, who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away justice from the righteous man. Therefore, as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root will be as rottenness, and their blossom will blow away like dust. Because they have rejected the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised [shown contempt for] the word of the Holy One of Israel." In my humble opinion this also defines the United States today and if it does not turn back to its foundation built on "In God We Trust" then without God this country will perish.
