La canción captura perfectamente los temas recurrentes de esa época: la atracción peligrosa, los romances fugaces, el exceso, la ciudad como escenario de sueños y perdición. En esta versión, la letra es más cruda y extensa que la definitiva del disco. Habla de una relación con alguien que ella sabe que “no es bueno” para ella, pero al mismo tiempo siente un deseo irresistible. “Diet Mountain Dew” funciona como símbolo: algo adictivo, artificial y dañino, pero atractivo. La ambientación en Nueva York y referencias a autos, 7-Eleven y hasta un Pontiac blanco pintan un retrato urbano, juvenil y decadente, muy de la estética Americana que Del Rey consolidó. La mezcla de inocencia (gafas en forma de corazón, la imagen de una chica bonita) con lo oscuro (mentiras, cenizas, velocidad, peligro) refuerza la dualidad de placer y destrucción. La pregunta central “Do you think we’ll be in love forever?” refleja esa inseguridad y la conciencia de que la relación probablemente sea pasajera, pero ella se entrega de todas formas.
