Bangladesh: PM Ousted, Interim Government To Be Formed | 10 News First

People in Bangladesh have taken to the streets in the country’s capital in celebration, after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday. Bangladesh's army chief has announced an interim government will now be formed. Hasina’s flight into exile follows the deaths of hundreds of Bangladeshis killed in a crackdown, first protesting a controversial job quota system and then Hasina’s leadership. Protesters have since been seen scaling a statue of the former PM’s father, state founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and began chiselling its head with an axe in defiance of the family. Hasina inherited her father’s political movement, which has controlled Bangladesh for the last 30 years. Monday’s resignation ends Hasina’s second stint in power, ruling for a total of 20 years.
