ABOUT THIS VIDEO: A hundred years ago in London there were broadly two different accents spoken by natives to the city: Received Pronunciation (Upper Class) and Cockney (Working Class). In the last hundred years, the class system and London's population have both diversified quickly resulting in the emergence of new accents: Standard Southern British English (SSBE) is the 'standard' accent of the middle classes and has widely replaced RP in education and broadcasting. Estuary is a mixture of SSBE and Cockney and is widely spoken throughout the South East of England. Multicultural London English (MLE) has emerged in urban London with Jamaican, African and Asian influences. In the video lesson I explore these accents phonologically using one simple sentence: "I hope the room's quieter." Each of the accents sounds different with H dropping, T Glottalisation, smoothing, intonation, and many vowel position variations playing a role. Which of these accents have you heard, and which do you like the sound of most? #phonetics #cockney #mle #estuary #accentchallenge
