Carmelia and Jesabelle came from Greenville County Animal Care after Krystal and Eric spoke with some of the leadership from GCAC in late 2017. They talked one of their biggest struggles being keeping dogs in their new homes after adoption. Believe it or not, many of the behaviors that cause dogs to return to the shelter, as well as get them turned into the shelter in the first place, can be managed relatively easily. That is, if you have an idea how to effectively and appropriately communicate with your dog... and hear what your dog is telling you. Things like jumping, walking on a loose leash, chewing things, counter surfing and issues involving their crate were some of the most common reasons dogs are given up. We had the opportunity to two dogs from GCAC, Carmelia and Jesabelle, home with us for a little while to improve their manners and help improve their chances of a long healthy happy life in their new forever home... once they find one. We spent some time working on their behaviors around other people, children, dogs, cats, human food, kid toys etc. We also taught them a few obedience commands; sit, down, place, come and how to walk on a loose leash. AND... we started working with them to learn what we call Livability Commands. This includes things like naming the rooms of your house so they can be given as commands. We have a brief CASE STUDY on our blog page that tells a little more about these girls. Go check it out, it'll be fun.
