Shimla has worn various mantles through time: from a small village in the hills, to being catapulted to international fame as the #summercapitaloftheBritishRaj, to its current position as the capital of #HimachalPradesh state. Today it is a favourite holiday destination for tourists, domestic as well as foreign, and one can reach Shimla by air, road, or the #Himalayanrailway, which is on the #UNESCO list of world heritage sites. This #narrow-guage railway was built between 1893-1903 to connect Shimla with the rest of India and carried the crème de la crème of the #BritishRaj from the sweltering plains of India to the #queenofthehills, Shimla where the Europeans masters were lodged in well-appointed cottages inside cedar and pine forests. Today this romantic train journey covers 96km from #Kalka to Shimla in about 5 hours and consists of 20 picturesque stations, 103 #tunnels, 912 curves, 969 #bridges, and some stunning #scenes of #hills and forests.
