An introduction of telehealth

An introduction of telehealth

Dr Rob Doughty, a heart failure specialist at the Auckland District Health Board (ADHB), provides an introduction on telehealth in relation to patients with heart failure. The video provides a perspective on telehealth from both a health provider and patient's perspective. In 2009, the ADHB, Gen-i and Alcatel-Lucent partnered to launch the first trial using mobile technology to monitor and manage patients with chronic illness in the comfort of their own home. During the three month trial participants took daily measurements of weight, blood pressure and pulse rate using an electronic scale and blood pressure monitor provided to them. Their measurements were automatically transmitted via mobile phone to a secure online database which stored the readings along with relevant medical data. The readings were monitored daily via a web portal, by the Auckland City Hospital cardiac team. Patients were also able to monitor their own readings.
