Winter gardening in the UK, even on a frosty morning, still has its quiet rhythm and jobs that gently need doing. In this video I spend time in the garden tackling some of those mundane but important winter tasks — the kind that keep everything ticking over until spring arrives. There’s more leaf raking (and honestly, you can never have too many leaves). They’re far too valuable to waste and will be reused in different ways around the garden, helping improve soil and protect plants. Winter really is the season of gathering and preparing. As always, I’m joined by my garden robin, who appears without fail whenever the leaves are disturbed. I find myself chatting away to him as he hops about, taking advantage of the insects uncovered — one of those simple winter moments that makes gardening so rewarding. I also do a bit of tidying around the herb garden, keeping things neat without overdoing it, and spend some time thinking about an old wooden trunk in the garden. I love it dearly, but it’s clearly in need of some care, and I’d really welcome ideas on how to restore or repurpose it while keeping its character. There’s also a little preparation around the crabapple ‘Prairie Fire’, quietly getting things ready for what will hopefully be a beautiful burst of blossom in spring — a reminder that even in winter, the garden is already looking ahead.
