Bishop Vernon Byrd’s sermon, “Stop Telling God What You’re Not Going to Do,” is rooted in Judges 6:11–16, where Gideon is called by God while hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat in fear of the Midianites. Bishop Byrd uses Gideon’s story to challenge believers who have become comfortable in survival mode, treating the abnormal as normal and allowing fear, oppression, insecurity, and self-doubt to define them. Like Gideon, many people respond to God’s call by listing what they lack, where they come from, what they have been through, or why they are not qualified. But God does not call Gideon by his weakness; God calls him “mighty warrior.” The sermon reminds the church that identity does not come from oppression, income, past mistakes, family history, government systems, or public opinion.
