(1931), the second recurring star of Merrie Melodies, Piggy, takes his girlfriend Fluffy to a jazz-filled theater. Piggy ridicules the trumpet player and jumps onstage to play a cheesy rendition of “Silver Threads Among the Gold”. Three drunken dogs mock him with the titular song, and after taking a swig of bootleg booze, Piggy hallucinates wildly. He pours the drink into a car’s radiator—and the car springs to life like an animated beast, launching Piggy on a surreal joyride through a bending, breathing cityscape. Eventually, Piggy and the dog tumble into a trash can with a triumphant “Whoopee!” Directed by Rudolf Ising, animated by luminaries like Friz Freleng, Norm Blackburn, and Robert McKimson, and set to music by Frank Marsales, this short is celebrated for introducing the trombone gobble sound—a cartoon classic—and serving as Piggy’s debut as a potential Mickey analogue. It was released around October 21, 1931 and runs approximately 7 minutes. #MerrieMelodies #YouDontKnowWhatYoureDoin #FirstTimeWatching #PiggyDebut #SurrealJazzRide #TromboneGobble #RudolfIsing #FrizFreleng #1931Cartoon #GoldenAgeAnimation
